🏛️ New government hires familiar people in key positions

while the government tackles issues at Huize Ashiana and Esther Stichting

Happy Monday!

This week we discuss some of the new government’s recent hires and plan for crucial positions in the government, and the ongoing issues at Huize Ashiana and Esther Stichting

New government hires familiar faces with dual functions

  • Grasella Jozefzoon has been appointed acting director of Research and Services at the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning by Minister Stephen Tsang.

  • Earlier this month, she also became a member of the State Council representing the National Democratic Party, giving her dual responsibilities which has drawn much criticism from the wider public

  • In 2021, Jozefzoon was suspended as director of the Roads Authority due to dissatisfaction from the Supervisory Board and then-Minister Riad Nurmohamed with her policies, a decision she contested.

Meanwhile Paul Somohardjo, chairman of the Pertjajah Luhur (PL), announced that President Jennifer Simons has extended his position as state advisor until 2030.

  • As a state advisor, Somohardjo enjoys the same facilities as a minister and is currently awaiting a dedicated office, possibly in the former Cabinet of the First Lady building.

  • He emphasized that he does not want the role to be ceremonial but intends to actively work in the position.

  • Somohardjo is the sole remaining state advisor, as former advisor Rusland is now Vice President.

  • He aims to focus his advisory role on affordable basic goods, urban home care, and potential housing support for the poor, while appreciating President Simons’ willingness to listen and consult with him.

  • The new government has also opened three vacancies for positions within important government institutions: chair of the board of the State Health Insurance Fund (SZF), president of the Supervisory Board of the Suriname Airlines Company (SLM), and president of the Supervisory Board of the Suriname Medicines Services Company (BGVS).

Crisis teams at Huize Ashiana and Esther Stichting after complaints

  • Minister Diana Pokie of Social Affairs and Housing set up temporary crisis teams at Huize Ashiana and the Esther Foundation after complaints, media reports, and her own visit revealed issues.

  • She stressed the importance of proper senior care, calling seniors “development drivers,” and found that problems were mainly due to management shortcomings.

  • The crisis teams, formed in consultation with the boards, have six months to assess the institutions and make recommendations.

  • Despite rumors of abuse, Pokie emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

  • As a long-term solution, she is considering a three-person leadership model combining management, healthcare, and financial expertise, but the crisis teams will first deliver proposals to the ministry.
